The 6 Biggest Skin-Care Mistakes

If there's one thing I stress to my patients, it's that great skin doesn't require spending a fortune on some "miracle cream" made from rare seaweed from the Arctic Circle! It's all about simple good habits. But let's approach those habits from the opposite direction: What are the most damaging bad habits that I see time and time again?

1. Using a cleanser with harsh detergents: Many people assume that the suds of their vigorously foaming cleanser are a good sign -- surely they'll leave skin extra clean. Unfortunately, copious suds are generally a sign that your cleanser contains a harsh detergent, like lauryl sulfate, that strips skin of vital lipids. (And don't get me started on bar soap -- that is always a no-no.) Instead, look for cleansers that contain fatty acids and will actually fortify your skin, like Dove's ProAge products, or even simple cold cream. If you have particularly dry skin, I recommend cleansing oils, which remove dirt and makeup without disturbing your skin's natural protective barrier.

2. Not using a retinoid: Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is the only topical ingredient proven not only to prevent lines and wrinkles but to minimize the ones you already have. Past the age of 30, I recommend seeing a dermatologist for a higher-concentration prescription retinoid (like Retin-A, Differin, or Tazorac, for example), but there are also many great over-the-counter creams that contain lower concentrations of retinol. I like Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night Cream, and SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0.

3. Spending too much on skin care: Splurging on the beautiful packaging and luxurious scents of pricey boutique skin care lines can feel wonderfully pampering -- provided you know that it's absolutely not necessary for great skin. In fact, many of my favorite products are made by drugstore brands, because those companies have the large budgets for top-notch research and development. If you have to choose, put your money toward that prescription retinoid, and buy the rest of your regimen at the drugstore.

4. Getting facials: Yes, that's right -- you can strike facials from your skin-care budget and actually be doing your skin a favor! Studies show that as many as 80% of people break out after a facial. Aestheticians often don't know which products are right for the skin of each client, and may use ingredients that can worsen acne, or essential oils that tend to irritate sensitive skin. Even if you don't break out, there are really no long-term benefits to facials.

5. Washing your face at the wrong time: Always wash your face after you rinse out your hair products and conditioner in the shower, never before. Many conditioners contain pore-clogging isopropyl myristate and other hair products often contain coconut oil -- both are common acne-causing ingredients that you don't want to leave on your skin.

6. Not using sunscreen every day: Not just for your trip to the beach. Not just during the long summer days. Every day. Yes, it's important to be even more vigilant if you plan to spend lots of time in direct sunlight. But incidental sun exposure typically accounts for more of our lifetime exposure to ultraviolet rays than those days at the beach. Walking to and from your car, dashing out of the office for a sandwich, or sitting outside for a few minutes adds up -- make sure you're covered with at least SPF 15, every day.

Wishing you great skin!

Pinoys boycott church in Saipan over racist remark

GARAPAN, Saipan – A loud remark made by a man claiming that a Catholic church in the US island of Saipan “is not for the Filipinos" led to a boycott of the parish and a temporary stop to monetary donations to the church by members of the Filipino community.

The Kristo Rai Church in Garapan, which was boycotted by some Filipinos, is one of the main Catholic churches in Saipan.

Saipan is the capital of the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), home to some 10,000 OFWs and Filipino-Americans.

The Catholic Church leadership has not issued any public statement about the discriminatory remarks against Filipinos and about the boycott.

But the community is also split about the issue – others support the boycott while others say boycotting the church will do further harm to all parties involved. E-mails and text messages calling for support to the boycotts also continue to circulate.

I didn’t donate to the church because I supported the boycott)," one of the regular Kristo Rai Church goers told GMANews.TV on Monday afternoon. She has been working in Saipan for 16 years.

But the OFW said while she does not condone hurtful and discriminatory remarks against Filipinos or any other race or ethnicity, she felt bad about not donating to the church on Sunday as she is used to doing.

The church in question had much fewer people on Sunday than the previous Sundays, she said.

Filipino members of a choir that serves the 9:30 a.m. Mass also boycotted the Kristo Rai Church on Sunday.

The Filipino choir has been singing at the church for seven years, while some of its members have been singing with other choirs in the island for over 15 years.

Noli Santos, coordinator of the 9:30 a.m. Mass choir, said there were several incidents in the past that were discouraging, frustrating and in most cases, discriminatory that they let pass but an incident he described as “a blatant discrimination against Filipinos at the Kristo Rai Church" on Dec. 20 after the Dawn Mass was too much to bear.

Santos said a local Saipan resident who is a member of the Parish Pastoral Council shouted at and humiliated a Filipina working as a maintenance staff member inside the church vicinity witnessed by him and many churchgoers.

“Being a parish official, Mr. (Vic) Cepeda should have exercised professionalism and should have discussed the matter in private. Instead, Mr. Cepeda chose to explode in public that left the poor Filipina speechless and crying," Santos said in an open letter.

He said what caught everyone's attention who witnessed the incident was when Cepeda said: “This is our church! This is not for the Filipinos. You can tell that to the priest. I don't care!"

The Catholic priest being referred to was Father Glen Ragsag, a Filipino, who is the parish priest of Kristo Rai Church.

“Any way we look at it, it's discriminatory to all Filipinos. Not politically but religiously," said Santos, adding that the Catholic Church does not discriminate against ethnic origins.

The choir called for the man who made the remark to apologize to the Filipinos and the Catholic community “for claiming that Kristo Rai Church is not for Filipinos."

“We are asking the support of all the Filipinos and Catholics who are opposed to this kind of discriminatory acts. Let us not attend any Mass at Kristo Rai Church until Mr. Cepeda issues a public apology. Let your voices be heard. We know other choir groups singing at Kristo Rai have experienced the same discrimination," said Santos.

Bill seeks compulsory welfare insurance plan for OFWs

MANILA, Philippines - A bill in the House of Representatives is seeking compulsory welfare insurance program for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

House Bill 5621 proposes that the welfare insurance program will created in addition to the benefits OFWs get from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

In an article on the House of Representatives website, author and Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said the bill aims to protect and ensure well-being of OFWs amid numerous reports of maltreatment and exploitation they suffer.

He said more than one million OFWs stand to benefit from the measure once it is enacted into law, citing that the number of those working abroad has increased almost 25-fold over the past 20 years.

There are now nearly 1.2 million registered deployments to over 190 countries in 2006 alone, he said.

Under the bill, the proposed insurance program shall cover the following:

* Accidental Death Benefit of up to US$15,000;
* Survivor's Benefit in case of natural death, of up to US10,000;
* Permanent Total Disablement of up to US$7,500;
* Repatriation of Bodily Remains, including burial, of up to US$15,000;
* Repatriation due to Emergency Evacuation and legitimate causes of up to US$1,000;
* Subsistence Allowance of US$100 per month for six months totaling US$600; and
* Legitimate Monetary Claims for Unpaid/Rightful and Just Wages of up to US$4,500.

Also, the bill provides that all recruitment agencies shall pay a premium of US$3 per month to OWWA for the insurance coverage of OFWs.

In case of failure to pay the premium on time, the recruitment agency shall be liable to pay interest at the rate of 12% annually.

Refusal to pay the premium for at least three consecutive months shall be a ground for the suspension or revocation of the recruitment agency's license based on the bill.

The matter of promulgating the rules and regulations of the measure once it is enacted into law shall be left to Department of Labor and Employment as provided in the bill.

Pinay nurse stabbed in Riyadh allegedly over makeup

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino nurse who had been working at the National Guard Hospital’s emergency ward in Saudi Arabia was stabbed by an alleged mentally ill man with a knife for wearing makeup.

Nailas was tipped off by a Filipino in Riyadh on condition of anonymity that the female nurse is now recovering from the incident.

A separate report from online news site Arab News on Monday said the assailant arrived in his car and covered his face with a head scarf before grabbing the nurse in the emergency ward and attempted to slit her throat with a knife because she was wearing makeup.

The Nailas source, who spoke with the victim's husband, however clarified that the Filipina nurse was not wearing makeup at the time of the incident.

The man, who was aged between 18 and 20, was quickly apprehended by the military police present at the hospital. The Arab News report said he had a history of drug abuse.

The assailant’s father was also reportedly a National Guard officer.

Esteban Conejos Jr, Department of Foreign Affairs undersecretary, said in a text message that they have yet to receive a report on the incident involving the Filipina nurse in Riyadh.

What caused the Vicky Bello, Hayden Kho breakup?3

Belo at Hayden.

Belo kay Hayden, ayon sa non-showbiz female friend ay: "If she ever finds out that he is having an affair, whoever that is, if it should happen, she would leave."

Hayden: Why are you against my relationship with your mom?

Cristalle: I don't know if I can trust you.

Hayden: You think I'm just using her?

Cristalle: Yeah, you're using her car.

Hayden: Why, does it bother you that I use the car?

Cristalle: Yes, I do.

Showbiz too hot to handle

"Hayden couldn't handle the fame and the fortune," sabi pa ng aming source.

Life after Hayden

Belo, "Pumayat siya, but she looked all right, she seemed happy."

She feels sad, she feels at loss. Ganun."

Kaya, as of now, ayaw niya munang makausap si Hayden."

Page 1-2-3

What cause the Vicky Bello, Hayden Kho breakup?2

Melodrama

Dagdag dito, habang nakaratay si Hayden ay naitanong pa raw nito kay Vicki: "Can I go back to Belo?"

Belo.

"I think that's too much if she takes him back. She has done everything for him. She has to think of herself this time."

Belo.

"She was crying in the parking lot," pag-quote ng source sa kasamahan. "She was walking to her car and crying. She was in an orange dress."

I don't think Hayden really meant to kill himself. As a doctor, he knows the lethal dosage. And many males, if they really want to commit suicide, they would succeed."

Rufa Mae denies involvement

Belo at Hayden.

"Ha?

Something like that," ani Rufa Mae.

Katrina evades the issue

I know Katrina so well. She's our baby... Aliw na aliw kami kay Katrina kasi she makes her own career, di ba?"

Aniya, "Hindi, a! So, nagkikita sila."

What cause the Vicky Bello, Hayden Kho breakup?

Siya ay 28 years old noong May 20, 2008.

The discovery

Umalis noong November 24 sina Dra.

Belo.
